SUMA KIDS,Inc. is proud of our assessment model. We work 1:1
with the child after reviewing a developmental questionnaire
filled out by parents/caregivers. We review any pertinent reports
that families wish to provide us. Some standardized tests are
used, along with clinical observations of carefully designed
assessment activities.
Our assessment focuses on the child’s areas of strengths
as well as areas of challenge. We evaluate your child’s
gross and fine motor skills, visual perceptual skills, upper
extremity functioning, hand development, visual motor integration
, handwriting (or pre-writing) skills, motor planning abilities,
and sensory processing. In addition bilateral coordination,
eye-hand coordination, hand/foot dominance, fine motor coordination
are also evaluated.
For children with sensory a sensory processing disorder (SPD) we use a standardized
parent evaluation tool and clinical observations to determine
sensory processing concerns such as sensory regulation, modulation,
defensiveness. Tactile, auditory, visual, proprioception, kinesthetic
awareness, vestibular and oral motor domains are all assessed
to help us create the appropriate “picture” of your
child, including areas of strength.
The assessment is based on a play model (as much as possible)
and generally takes 11/2 - 2 hours to administer. The therapist
then reviews , scores and interprets the findings. These are
presented to parents at a 1 hour meeting, within two weeks of
the assessment . At this meeting the test results are reviewed,
explained and our recommendations are given.
Many families request direct treatment at our clinic and a treatment
plan with proposed goals is created for clinic implementation.
Most parents choose to implement home activities. Many
use the assessment as part of their child’s educational
planning process.
